What Your Flea Market Purchase Says About You

A Completely Unqualified and Slightly Judgmental Guide
They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
That's probably good advice.
We're ignoring it.
Because after spending enough time in a flea market, I've decided I can tell you exactly who you are based solely on what you carried to the register.
Is any of this scientifically accurate?
Absolutely not.
Am I still going to make wildly specific assumptions about your personality, hobbies, marriage, age, and possibly your name?
Absolutely.
Let's begin.
🛒 YOU LEFT EMPTY-HANDED
You're boring.
Or maybe just bored.
Your kids are finally back in school, you needed a little me time outside the house, and wandering around a flea market for an hour without anyone asking you for a snack sounded pretty darn good.
You probably stopped for coffee first.
You touched 37 things.
Said "Oh, that's cute" at least nine times.
Bought absolutely nothing.
And honestly? You still had a pretty good morning.
Your name is probably Tina, Susan, Nancy, Barbara, or Diane.
We're glad you came, Tina.
But next time...
buy the $3 chicken. Live a little.
🛠️ YOU BOUGHT OLD TOOLS
You're hardworking.
Or you really, really want us to believe you are.
You either have a garage full of projects and genuinely know exactly what that thing does...
OR you picked it up, turned it over twice, nodded thoughtfully, and decided it made you look blue-collar.
We can usually tell which one you are based on the rest of your purchases.
Your name is probably Josh, Chris, Randy, Dale, or Steve.
Bonus points if you said:
"They don't make 'em like this anymore."
🏺 YOU BOUGHT SOMETHING NOBODY CAN IDENTIFY
You're curious.
Some might say impulsive.
Some might say you shouldn't spend money on things when you don't even know what they are.
Those people sound negative.
You saw an old rusty object with three holes, a crank, and absolutely no identifiable purpose and thought:
I need that.
Your name is probably Ashley, Amy, Courtney, Erica, or Heather.
You will spend three hours researching it tonight.
And when you figure it out, you're telling EVERYBODY.
Whether they asked or not.
🍽️ YOU BOUGHT VINTAGE PYREX
You're committed.
Not to a person.
To a pattern.
Your cabinets are full, your shelves are full, and you already own something almost identical.
But almost identical is NOT identical.
Obviously.
Your name is probably Lisa, Tammy, Brenda, Michelle, or Patty.
You also know which patterns are rare, which colors are desirable, and exactly who in your family is getting cut out of the will if they put one in the dishwasher.
🖼️ YOU BOUGHT THE WEIRDEST THING IN THE BUILDING
You're confident.
You don't need other people to understand your decorating choices.
In fact...
you'd almost prefer they didn't.
Everyone else walked past that creepy doll, strange painting, bizarre figurine, or unidentifiable animal sculpture.
You stopped and said:
"OH MY GOSH. I LOVE IT."
Your name is probably Laura, Brittany, Nicole, Amber, or Ashley.
Your family hates it.
Which somehow makes you love it more.
🐓 YOU BOUGHT A ROOSTER
You're country.
Or you live in a subdivision and desperately wish you were country.
Either way, you've said "farmhouse" within the last 72 hours.
Your name is probably Debbie, Donna, Kathy, Cheryl, or Marlene.
You claim you don't collect roosters.
You just happen to own 17 of them.
That's a collection, Debbie.
🧺 YOU BOUGHT A BASKET
You're organized.
Or at least you really enjoy purchasing things that make it LOOK like you're organized.
There's a difference.
You have big plans for this basket.
Blankets.
Towels.
Magazines.
Maybe vegetables.
Realistically, it will probably hold a bunch of random cords nobody knows what belong to.
Your name is probably Karen, Becky, Melissa, Robin, or Julie.
You also own a label maker.
Don't lie.
🎄 YOU BOUGHT CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS IN JULY
You're a planner.
Possibly an overachiever.
Possibly insane.
It's 97 degrees outside and you just bought a ceramic Christmas tree.
Your name is probably Carol—because obviously—but we'll also accept Holly, Mary, Noelle, or Joy.
You have already purchased at least three Christmas gifts.
The rest of us will see you at Walmart on December 23rd.
Show-off.
👗 YOU BOUGHT VINTAGE CLOTHING
You're cool.
Annoyingly cool.
You can wear a 1997 NASCAR shirt that somebody's dad wore while mowing the lawn and somehow make it look fashionable.
Your name is probably Chloe, Madison, Olivia, Ava, or Brooklyn.
You also just referred to something from 2002 as "vintage."
Several of us would like you to stop doing that.
Immediately.
📚 YOU BOUGHT AN OLD BOOK
You're sentimental.
Or you want everyone who visits your house to think you're well-read.
We're not sure yet.
If you actually plan to read it: sentimental intellectual.
If you bought it because the cover matches your living room:
fraud.
😂
Your name is probably Elizabeth, Abigail, Eleanor, Caroline, or Margaret.
Either way, it looks fantastic stacked under a lamp.
💎 YOU BOUGHT JEWELRY
You're fancy.
Or at least you're going somewhere eventually.
You didn't need another necklace.
You knew this.
You bought it anyway.
Your name is probably Sarah, Jessica, Amanda, Rachel, or Stephanie.
You have an entire jewelry box filled with pieces you haven't worn since 2018.
But THIS necklace?
This necklace is going to change everything.
🧸 YOU BOUGHT A TOY FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD
You're nostalgic.
And apparently still a little bitter that your mother threw all your stuff away.
You picked it up and IMMEDIATELY announced:
"I HAD THIS!"
Your name is probably Jason, Matt, Kevin, Eric, or Scott.
You've now explained to three strangers that yours was red, your brother broke it, and if your mom hadn't thrown away all your toys you'd "probably be sitting on a gold mine."
Sure, Jason.
Sure.
☕ YOU BOUGHT ANOTHER COFFEE MUG
You're caffeinated.
And bad at accepting that cabinets have physical limitations.
Your name is probably Jennifer, Crystal, Angela, Tiffany, or Kim.
Someone at home has already told you:
NO MORE MUGS.
But this one was different.
It had a chicken on it.
There was nothing you could do.
🪧 YOU BOUGHT A SIGN THAT SAYS "GATHER"
You're welcoming.
Or you're concerned your family will forget what they're supposed to do in the dining room.
Your name is probably Stacey, Misty, Dawn, Tonya, or Lori.
Your house also contains signs saying:
EAT.
LAUNDRY.
PANTRY.
WELCOME.
Without you, Stacey, we'd all just wander aimlessly through our homes with no idea what to do.
Thank you for your service.
🕰️ YOU BOUGHT SOMETHING BECAUSE "MY GRANDMA HAD ONE"
You're sentimental.
And completely defenseless against nostalgia.
I'm not even assigning names to this one.
Your name is:
ALL OF US.
The second you said:
"My grandma had one just like this..."
the transaction was over.
You were buying it.
It could've been $3.
It could've been $300.
Emotion had entered the chat.
Logic had left the building.
📦 YOU BOUGHT SOMETHING WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PLAN FOR IT
You're creative.
That's what we're calling it.
Other people might use words like impulsive, hoarder-ish, or why-do-we-own-this?
Ignore those people.
Your name is probably Ashley, Carrie, Jamie, Trisha, or Monica.
You don't currently know what you're going to do with it.
But you have a vision.
You just haven't had the vision yet.
Very different thing.
🤑 YOU BOUGHT SOMETHING ONLY BECAUSE IT WAS CHEAP
You're financially responsible.
At least according to your personal understanding of economics.
Your name is probably Sharon, Glenda, Vicki, Janice, or Pam.
Did you need it?
No.
Did you particularly want it?
No.
Was it $2?
YES.
Therefore, you basically MADE money.
Do not ask us to explain the math.
🤫 YOU SAID "DON'T TELL MY HUSBAND/WIFE"
You're independent.
That's a much nicer word than sneaky.
Your name is probably Ashley, Renee, Danielle, Nikki, or Beth.
You make your own financial decisions.
You don't need permission.
You are a grown adult.
Which is why you immediately leaned across the counter and whispered:
"Don't tell my husband."
Don't worry.
We won't.
Unless he asks.
Then we're folding immediately.
🪑 YOU BOUGHT FURNITURE THAT CLEARLY DOES NOT FIT IN YOUR VEHICLE
You're optimistic.
Extremely optimistic.
Your name is probably Ashley who married a Josh, Katie who married a Brian, Stacy who married a Kevin, Megan who married a Mike, or Lindsey who married a Chris.
You saw a six-foot cabinet.
You drove a Honda.
You bought it anyway.
Because this isn't your problem anymore.
You brought Josh.
And Josh, Brian, Kevin, Mike, and Chris share one important personality trait:
They will NOT admit that furniture isn't going to fit.
Seats will be folded.
Headrests will be removed.
Ratchet straps will appear.
Someone will say:
"Hang on. I got an idea."
That's when things get dangerous.
But somehow...
THEY WILL MAKE IT FIT.
And your husband will spend the entire drive home acting like this situation was completely avoidable.
It was.
That's beside the point.
🦆 YOU BOUGHT ONE RANDOM ANIMAL DECORATION
You're about to become a collector.
You just don't know it yet.
Your name is probably Wanda, Sheila, Rhonda, Darlene, or Gail.
Today you bought one duck.
Next month your daughter will see a duck and think:
"Mom likes ducks!"
Then your sister buys you one.
Then your coworker.
Suddenly it's 2031 and your entire kitchen is ducks.
You didn't choose the duck life.
The duck life chose you.
🛍️ YOU CAME FOR ONE THING AND LEFT WITH AN ENTIRE CART
You're easily distracted.
Or extremely talented at shopping.
Depends who you ask.
Your name is probably Ashley, Samantha, Kelsey, Lindsey, or Hannah.
You came in for a picture frame.
You bought:
A lamp.
Two bowls.
Three records.
A rusty thing.
A shirt.
Something for your mom.
Something because Grandma had one.
Something you don't know what it is.
And a $3 chicken.
You forgot the picture frame.
You did flea market shopping correctly.
SO...WHAT DOES YOUR FLEA MARKET PURCHASE SAY ABOUT YOU?
Absolutely nothing.
I made all of this up.
But there's probably at least one section where you felt personally attacked, and I'm choosing to believe that proves my methods are scientifically sound.
And before anyone points something out...
Yes.
I noticed it too.
HOW DID MY NAME END UP IN ALMOST EVERY CATEGORY?!
Must be because Ashley is such a common name.
That's definitely it.
It couldn't POSSIBLY be because I've bought things I couldn't identify, weird things nobody else wanted, things I had no plan for, things Josh didn't need to know about, furniture that didn't fit in our vehicle, and gone shopping for one thing only to come home with twelve completely unrelated objects.
Pure coincidence.
There are lots of Ashleys.
I'm sure THEY'RE the problem.
Not me.
Anyway...
Moving on before Josh reads this too closely. 😂
YOUR TURN:
What was the last thing YOU bought at a flea market?
Tell us in the comments and we'll make completely unqualified assumptions about you too.
Results are not scientifically accurate. Results may, however, be disturbingly accurate.
